Woe… Oh No!
“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. “Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. “Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. (Luke 6:24-25)
Woe? Woe doesn’t seem like a word Jesus would use when speaking to people, I mean Jesus is all about God’s love, right?
Friend, sometimes the loving thing to do is speak the truth.
Think about it, if your friend were about to take a bungie jump, and you saw that the big rubber band was frayed and about to break, wouldn’t the loving thing to do be to say “Whoa!!” OK, that’s a different woe.
So perhaps Jesus is making a larger statement.
If we look at the key words; “rich,” “full,” “laugh,” “speak well,” it seems Jesus is warning us about the values of the world system. See the world system contains a message: “If you’ll make lots of money, buy lots of stuff, have lots of fun, and make everyone think you’re just awesome… you’ll be happy!”
And it is partially true. There is a certain amount of pleasure in these things. It’s also true that these things aren’t “bad” in and of themselves.
But the reality is that these things will not bring you lasting peace and happiness, nor will they bring you into the kingdom of God. History is full of men and women who have pursued these things, and yet in the end, when they have them all, they aren’t fulfilled.
In fact, if your live is spent in pursuit of these things, this life will be your kingdom. Your heaven will have been earth.
I believe that’s the larger point Jesus is making: What do you live your life for? This life, or the next? Are you pursuing the riches and comforts of life, or God?
Funny thing is, if we pursue God, these things will be ours. God promises every one of these things to the person who humbles themselves before Him, and pursues Him with all of their heart.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. Eph 1:8
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:19
Joy and peace…
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Rom 15:13
Good standing before God and man…
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Pro 3:1-3
This is the truth Jesus is communicating:
Pursue the world… woe are you!
Pursue God… blessed are you!
We can change the world, one life at a time…
