These are crazy times.
I’ve said this dozens of times, and I keep saying it because things keep getting crazier! Every weekly news cycle contains events that top the previous week.
It leads one to wonder many things:
- Why does God allow evil such as ISIS to not only exist, but to seemingly run rampant? Innocent blood is spilled every day.
- Why does God allow rampant corruption to exist? The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.
- Why does God allow our leaders to be proponents of iniquity, continually lie to us, and unevenly apply the law?
- Why doesn’t God clean things up?
Years ago another man had the same thoughts:
2 O Lord, how long shall I cry, And You will not hear? Even cry out to You, “Violence!” And You will not save. 3 Why do You show me iniquity, and cause me to see trouble? For plundering and violence are before me; There is strife, and contention arises. 4 Therefore the law is powerless, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.
– Habakuk 1:2-4
Habakuk looked at the culture around him, and it was a depressing sight! And so he asked God, “How can you let this go on? When will you hear my cry?”
The same could be said for today. Many of us look at the culture surrounding us, and it’s pretty depressing. Violence, sin, greed, corruption, division and strife. And our government, which is supposed to protect us, seems to be more interested in political power than protecting it’s citizens. The law is applied in an unjust manner. And I know many Christians are asking the same question of God, “How can you let this go on? When will you hear my cry?”
I believe the answer that God gave to Habakuk is also God’s answer to us today:
“Look among the nations and watch— Be utterly astounded! For I will work a work in your days which you would not believe, though it were told you.” Habakuk 1:5
In other words, God is not unaware of the state of mankind. He is fully aware, and fully in control. He has a plan, and it will come to pass, it simply might not look like what we think it should.
See, God doesn’t always work in the way that we think He should. But He does work.
Instead of acting like a policeman and forcing people to act right, God sent us a powerful tool: The gospel message – when a person accepts Christ, everything changes!
But you might ask, “what about all the bad actors that reject the gospel?”
God has a plan for them as well. You can read about it in Revelation chapter 19:
11 Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
– Revelation 19:11-16
So Christian, don’t become depressed about all of the crazy things happening in our world today. Remember that God is sovereign and fully in control.
And trust that soon we will look upon the nations and be utterly astounded, for God will do a work that we can hardly believe, even though He has clearly told us about it in His word!
We can change the world, one life at a time…
