Treasure These Things – Luke 2:19
Reading plan for this week: Luke 2:1-21
But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. (Luke 2:19)
Last Sunday one of the points in my message was:
“When we believe God’s word, we’ll declare God’s word.”
It’s a powerful principle in that when we declare what God has said, it encourages our faith, it encourages the faith of those around us, and we become participants of what God is doing.
But there’s a counter to that – There are times that God will reveal something to us, and instead of immediately declaring it, we supposed to treasure it up in our heart for a period.
One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to speak truth into our hearts, and to tell us things that will come:
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (John 16:33)
But why would we sit on what the Spirit reveals? Three reasons…
#1 – There are times that God will reveal something to us so that we’ll pray.
Not everything that the Lord reveals to us is for public consumption. God may show you the secret sin of a brother or sister with the sole intent that you are to pray for that person. There may come a time to confront, but initially you’re just supposed to pray.
#2 – There are times that God will reveal something to us that only we need to know.
There may be things coming in your life that the Lord wants you to be aware of, but others may not understand. God may want you to know, and no one else.
#3 – There are times when God will reveal something to us that He will confirm later.
Several years before God called me to be a pastor, He gave my wife a prophetic word that I would be called. Had she told me then, I may have never obeyed the Lord, I probably would have run in the opposite direction! Or I might have gone after it earlier than His timing, and messed up His plan.
But on that day in 2000 when I came home from a men’s retreat, and told my wife that God had called me to be a pastor, she had that prophetic word stored up in her heart, and she was able to confirm it. She even had it written down in her journal from that day years before!
How do we know? Simple, the Spirit of God will lead us into truth. So the next time the Spirit reveals something to you, don’t forget to ask, “Lord, what do I do with this?”
…these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. (1 Corinthians 2:10)
We can change the world, one life at a time…
