The “Gog-Magog” Coalition & Turkey (Ezekiel 38)
On Sunday I promised to post some of the material from the Prophecy Update that did not make it into the final cut due to time. This is the first of several posts this week.
When looking at the “Gog-Magog” coalition in Ezekiel 38, we see many of the countries already aligned strategically and militarily:
Magog, Meshech, and Tubal = Russia
Persia = Iran
Cush = Ethiopia
Put = Libya
Gomer = Turkey
Beth-togarmah = Turkey, Armenia, and the Turkish-speaking people of Asia Minor
But there’s a significant country missing – Gomer / Turkey – who this year snubbed Russia by shooting down a MIG.
For more on Gog-Magog, see my blog…
Since the demise of the ottoman empire in 1924, turkey has been a “secular” state, and has historically been aligned with the West, for example allowing the US use of the Incirlik air base, and allowing logistics transport through it’s country.
But under the AKP party and PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey is becoming more Islamic, and more anti-west. Turkey supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and Turkey is also working with Iran to establish broader trade agreements for natural gas. So we’re seeing signs of a “realignment” of Turkey’s foreign relations away from the West, and Israel.
Turkey and Israel
Turkey has in the past been a partner with Israel, staying out of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But this year PM Erdoğan began turning more towards Hamas in the Gaza. In December of 2015 PM Erdoğan met in Istanbul with Khaled Meshaal, leader of Palestinian militant group Hamas (see article).
Israel’s once-strong ties to Turkey soured in 2010 when Israeli commandoes killed 10 Turkish activists when storming the Mavi Marmara, a ship in a convoy seeking to break an Israeli naval blockade of the Palestinian territory of Gaza.
Turkey had demanded Israel apologise over the assault, pay compensation and lift the Gaza blockade. For Israel, limiting Hamas activity in Turkey has been key.
They have been working towards normalizing relations, but there are two sticking points:
Turkey-Israel Relations 2015: Ankara Demands ‘Unrestricted Access’ To Hamas-Controlled Gaza Strip
Turkey is demanding Israel pay reparations to the victims of the Mavi Marmara flotilla raid, and allow it unrestricted access to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip as a condition for formally restoring diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Israel Demands Turkey Commit to Not Attacking Israel
Netanyahu decided to hold up the compensation agreement for the victims of the Mavi Marmara flotilla raid unless Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commits to not attacking him or the State of Israel.
We’re seeing turkey become more anti-Israel, and anti-West, and more open and friendly to the countries listed in the Gog Magog Coalition. So we’ll watch what Turkey does this coming year.
