The Ezekiel 38-39 War – A Hook In The Jaw
In this series of posts, we’re looking at several events that will lead up to the Seven Year Tribulation. To read the previous posts:
In today’s post, we’re going to look at the reason this Gog-Magog coalition decides to invade Israel.
In the aftermath of the Psalm 38 war, after their plan to destroy Israel fails, Russia, lusting over the wealth of Israel, will militarily join with Iran, and they will form a new coalition. This action, according to Ezekiel, is literally guided by the Lord:
Ezek 38:4 “And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws”
The goal of this coalition will not only be the obvious hatred driven motives to slaughter the Jews, but will also be the taking of a great wealth which will be in Israel. (Note: It is a stated objective of the current Iranian regime to destroy the state of Israel.)
Ezekiel 38 describes one of the reasons that the Gog-Magog coalition invades Israel is to plunder her wealth:
11 You will say, “I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people—all of them living without walls and without gates and bars. 12I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land.”
The true motive of this coalition is to take the vast wealth that Israel has acquired. In Further, Ezekiel 36 prophesies about the re-gathering of the Jewish nation (started in 1948), and it’s future wealth:
11 I will increase the number of men and animals upon you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
Note here “and will make you prosper more than before.” “Before” could be a reference to King Solomon, who was the richest king in the world, and as well Israel was the richest nation in the world. Here the Lord is saying he will make Israel even richer than she was then.
There are additional verses that speak to Israel’s future wealth:
12 Of Benjamin he said, “May the beloved of the LORD dwell in security by Him, who shields him all the day, and he dwells between His shoulders.” 13 Of Joseph he said, “Blessed of the LORD be his land, with the choice things of heaven, with the dew, and from the deep lying beneath,
19 “They will call peoples to the mountain; There they will offer righteous sacrifices; For they will draw out the abundance of the seas, and the hidden treasures of the sand.”
24 Of Asher he said, “More blessed than sons is Asher; May he be favored by his brothers, and may he dip his foot in oil.
1 Thus says the LORD to Cyrus His anointed, whom I have taken by the right hand, to subdue nations before him and to loose the loins of kings; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: 2 “I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars. 3 “I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden wealth of secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.”
Through these verses the Lord is declaring that He will enrich Israel. Until now, these verses didn’t make sense. But in March 2009, Noble Energy announced the discovery of the Dalit natural gas well, about 30 miles off the coast of Hadera.
The gross mean resources of the Dalit well is estimated to be 500 Bcf (Billion cubic feet) of natural gas. This was followed by the announcement of the Mari and Noa fields with estimated reserves of 1.7 Tcf (Trillion cubic feet) of gas.
Then came the news of the Leviathan Oil Field, which is reported to have up to 4.3 billion barrels of oil. In addition, oil has been discovered in the Golan Heights area.
The ramifications of these discoveries are that Israel could become self-sufficient in energy, enjoy a boon of employment, and could become an exporter of gas and oil.
So it appears that the Word of God, written over 2,700 years ago, describes dead-on the current economic reality of Israel today. God ensured from the foundations of the world that the tiny nation of Israel would one day be an energy rich country.
Thus, we should not be surprised that when God also tells us that a coalition of Russia and Iran will take military action to acquire these vast resources.
In the next post, we’ll look at the world-wide ramifications of the Gog-Magog War.
