Sisters of Encouragement – Luke 1:45
Reading plan for this week: Luke 1:39-80
In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. (Luke 1:39-40)
When Mary heard the angel Gabriel’s message, the first thing she did was to travel 80 miles to see her relative Elizabeth. We’re not told why she went, but we know the the message Mary received would not be well believed by many people. According to Matthew’s account, even Joseph didn’t believe her at first. So perhaps Mary went to the one person that might believer her, her relative Elizabeth, who had also been blessed by God with a supernatural pregnancy. And she was right,
And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Luke 1:41-45)
How wonderful it must have been to not be doubted! How refreshing it must have been to to be encouraged in that God was doing, and what God was going to do in Mary’s life!
Christian, that’s why it’s so important that we encourage one another in our faith.
We live in a culture that doubts the existence of God, and scoffs at those who trust in Him. Even in some Christian circles, believing God for the miraculous is considered naive.
I believe one of the most powerful things we can do for our Christian brothers and sister, in addition to praying for them, is to encourage them…
Encourage them that God loves them
God is love… (1 John 4:8)
Encourage them that God will strengthen them
May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy (Col 1:11)
Encourage them that God will guide them
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go (Ps 32:8)
Encourage them that God is faithful to fulfill His word.
He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. (1 Thess 5:21)
Think about the last time a fellow Christian encouraged you, wasn’t it refreshing? Didn’t it lift your spirit? Didn’t it strengthen your faith?
Then… why don’t we do it more often? We should do it more often.
Why not take a moment now, and encourage someone that you know is going through a hard time. Send them a text with a scripture. Give them a call and pray with them over the phone.
You never know how timely that encouragement might be.
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:23-25)
We can change the world, one life at a time…
