Our Vision: WORD
This coming Sunday we’ll be celebrating the 21 year anniversary of Calvary Chapel of Wilmington. It’s pretty incredible to think that CCW has been ministering the word of God in this city for twenty one years!
As we approach the event, I thought it would be good to remind ourselves of our reason for being here.
WORD – We will faithfully teach, and obey the word of God.
Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching – 2 Tim 4:2
I remember the first time I attended a Calvary Chapel in the spring of 1994. Tammy and I had been praying for over a year, and we were feeling that the Lord was moving us into a new season of our faith.
So on a Sunday that we happened to be free of our ministry commitments at our church, we decided to visit this new church that had just started in our town of Cary, NC. This new church, Calvary Chapel Cary, was meeting in a doublewide trailer. We dropped out kids off in the Children’s ministry (one of the the bedrooms!), and took a seat in the sanctuary, which was a converted two-car garage.
Can I just tell you, there was nothing about that church that impressed me… until the pastor got up and started teaching from the bible. I had heard many “sermons,” but I had never been taught the word of God in such a simple yet clear way. Instead of hearing a man’s opinion about the word of God, Pastor Rodney Finch was simply teaching the word of God, verse-by-verse. As Tammy and I sat on the back row of that garage sanctuary, the Lord spoke to each of our hearts, “this is home.”
From that day forward, God used Calvary Chapel Cary to exponentially grow and nurture our family’s faith in the Lord. And that growth stemmed from the consistent culture of that church to preach, teach, and obey the Word of God. In that church I learned how to study the bible. I was mentored by men who encouraged me to read and study the bible. I was given opportunities to teach and mentor other men in the bible.
Through that church I began to experience the promise of 2 Timothy 3:16-17:
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
– 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“The promise?” Yes, this is a promise from God that if we will read, study, and apply the word of God in our lives, we will be equipped for every work that God directs us to.
And that is exactly what God did in our lives; He equipped Tammy and I through His word for the work that He sent us to here in Wilmington NC.
Calvary Chapel of Wilmington is many things, but one of our foundational principles is that we will faithfully teach, and obey the word of God, as our statement of faith declares:
We believe that all of the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, and that they are the infallible rule of faith and practice.
So if you come to Calvary Chapel of Wilmington, one thing that will always be consistent is that you will be taught the word of God
We can change the world, one life at a time..
