Missio Dei (The Mission of God) – Your Mission Field
Often we think of “outreach” as an event, like “does your church hold an outreach?”
There’s nothing wrong with holding outreach events, but we should also recognize that outreach isn’t limited to an activity or an event… outreach should be a LIFESTYLE.
Yes there were a few times when Jesus gathered a lot of people together to share His message. But most of His ministry was going to where the people were.
“Being missional involves going to where the people are.”
Think about it – we go “out” every day, but do we go out with a missional mindset?
Here’s an exercise – take a moment and think through your average day. Think about all of the places that you go, then count up how many people do you interact with…
- At work
- At school
- Your hobby’s
- The gym
- Kids programs
- Your neighbors
- Businesses you frequent
- On social Mediq
If you were to count them up, you might be surprised at how many people you come into contact with in a single day.
My point: That is the mission field that God has created in your life.
“If you’re a Christian, you’re a missionary, and you’re mission field is all around you.”
And I believe the key to being effective in our “mission field” is to have a heart for the people that we come into contact each and every day.
Reading through the life of Jesus, it seems to me that He had a heart for people. He had a heart for sinners. He had a heart for those who were struggling. That’s the same heart that God the Father has, and same heart He gives to us through the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
“God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)
“The love for people is already in us, we simply need to engage it.”
Instead of running through our day in a rush to get to the next thing, or being consumed with what we’re doing at the moment, let’s start opening our eyes to the sea of people around us, and engage them with the love of Christ. Their eternal future is at stake.
We can change the world, one life at a time…
