Why Was Jesus Born? Reason #5: To Be The Promised “Seed Of Abraham”
As we lead up to our Christmas service on Dec 23rd, Hope Arrives, we’re going to look at seven reason’s why Jesus had to be born,
Today we look at reason #5 why Jesus was born:
Jesus was born to be the promised “Seed of Abraham”
Jesus is the fulfillment of a long-ago promise that God made to Abraham. In Genesis 22, God promised Abraham that through his “seed,” or descendants, all of the nations of the world would be blessed.
“…and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” – Genesis 22:18
In this statement, God revelealed that His plan of redemption would include all people, of all races, and all national and ethnic groups.
See, under the Old Covenant, God chose the nation of Israel to proclaim the name of God other nations (Deuteronomy 4:5-8). Israel, being subject to the frailties of humanity, failed in this mission. Their worship of God became exclusive to themselves; they shunned other nations, considering them unfit for the worship of the one true God.
But the Israelites were forerunners of a new spiritual house of Israel, the New Covenant, which would include believers of every ethnicity and nationality, as Romans 2 tells us:
“For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter.”
– Romans 2:28-29
But in order for that promise to be fulfilled, there needed to be a literal, physical descendant of Abraham.
That man was Jesus Christ. He was Abraham’s Seed (see Matthew 1:1-17), the One through whom all nations of the world would be blessed.
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” – Galatians 3:28-29
The key word here is heirs. Through Christ, believers become sons of God:
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’” – Romans 8:14-15
So this season as we celebrate Christmas, let’s remember to acknowledge the fact that Jesus was born so that you and I can experience the blessing of Abraham;
“…so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.” – Galatians 3:14
We can change the world, one life at a time…
