God Loved You First – Luke 3:22
Scripture reading for this week: Luke 3:1-22
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22)
I read something recently that pointed out the fact that God the Father made this statement about Jesus before Jesus had done any of the work He was sent to do.
See at this point in His life, Jesus hadn’t yet performed any miracles, or taught any sermons. Water hadn’t yet been turned to wine. Lazarus wasn’t raised from the dead. Money changers still operated in the Temple.
I can’t help but think had any of us been at that baptism, and if we had any idea of the task in front of Jesus, we might have said “We’ll see how He does.”
But not God the Father. His love and affirmation were in full force right from the start.
The reason this is important is because it reveals the fact that the Father loved the Son, and was well pleased with Him, simply because of who He was.
If you’re a parent, you can relate – we love our children before they ever do anything to deserve it. Matter of fact, they sometimes do things that hurt us, even break our hearts… but we still love them deeply.
And saint, that is a picture of God’s love for you.
God doesn’t start loving you when you start being a “good Christian,” God loves you before you do a single good thing. In fact, the bible teaches us that God loved us before we even became Christians, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us:
“…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
So the next time you start feeling like you haven’t lived up to God’s expectations, or that you don’t deserve God’s love, remember this:
God loved you first, and His love and approval isn’t contingent on anything you might do or not do.
“We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
We can change the world, one life at a time…
