End Times Prophecy – The Lead up to the Ezekiel 38-39 War
In my previous posts, I lay out the biblical case for the Psalm 83 War, which I believe to be a different war than the one described in Ezekiel 38 and 39, the War of Gog-Magog. To read the previous posts:
In this next series of posts, we’ll look at the aftermath of the Psalm 38 war, which will set the conditions that will lead up the war described in Ezekiel 38-39, the “Gog-Magog War.”
Times of Peace and Security
According to Ezekiel 38:10-11, prior to the Gog-Magog war, Israel will be living in peace, in unwalled villages before the Gog-Magog war.
10 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “It will come about on that day, that thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil plan, 11 and you will say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates,
Some bible critics may say that Ezekiel must be wrong, since Israel has recently completed what’s called the West-Bank barrier, a network of walls, fences, and vehicle-barrier trenches located primarily along the 1949 Armistice line between Israel and Jordan
Yes, today, Israel is not living in peace, nor are they living without walls.
However, if one considers the aftermath of the Psalm 83 war, Israel’s territory will have been significantly expanded, and it’s immediate enemies defeated, allowing the Jewish state to experience a limited time of peace without walls or barriers.
Ezekiel 38:1-16 gives us a vivid description of the mindset of the nations prior to coming against Israel:
1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him 3 and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4 And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. 5 Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you.
7 “Be ready and keep ready, you and all your hosts that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them. 8 After many days you will be mustered. In the latter years you will go against the land that is restored from war, the land whose people were gathered from many peoples upon the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the peoples and now dwell securely, all of them. 9 You will advance, coming on like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the land, you and all your hordes, and many peoples with you.
10 “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme 11 and say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will fall upon the quiet people who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having no bars or gates,’ 12 to seize spoil and carry off plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places that are now inhabited, and the people who were gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell at the center of the earth. 13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all its leaders will say to you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? Have you assembled your hosts to carry off plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to seize great spoil?’
14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say to Gog, Thus says the Lord God: On that day when my people Israel are dwelling securely, will you not know it? 15 You will come from your place out of the uttermost parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army. 16 You will come up against my people Israel, like a cloud covering the land. In the latter days I will bring you against my land, that the nations may know me, when through you, O Gog, I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
The invading nations are:
- Magog, Rosh = Russia and the former Soviet republics
- Persia = Iran
- Cush = Sudan, Ethiopia, and Possibly Eritrea
- Put = Libya, Algeria, and Tunisa
- Gomer, Meshech, and Tubal = Turkey (and possibly Germany and Austria)
- Beth-togarmah = Turkey, Armenia, Turkish-speaking people of Asia Minor & Central Asia
But one might wonder how the world might stand by passively while Israel is attacked. So let’s look at the state of the world after the Psalm 83 war.
The State of the World
To accurately understand the atmosphere at this time, we must remember that the world will be in a complete state of shock and anger over the previous Psalm 38 war which saw the first use of nuclear weapons since WWII, as well as the use of chemical and biological weapons.
Damascus will be completely destroyed, a mound of rubble. The map of the Middle East will have changed with Israel now controlling most all of the land that once belonged to the nations surrounding her.
Economic chaos will prevail throughout the world, as oil flow from the Middle East will be stopped or at least greatly reduced as a result of the Psalm 38 war.
Fragile economies such as the US and EU’s may well collapse due the price of oil skyrocketing from the Psalm 83 war. Demand for the oil and gas will be staggering, and Israel will have control of a great amount of supply. Countries that had previously aligned against Israel will now need her resources.
At the same time there will be unprecedented price shock at the pumps as oil and gas prices yet again reach never before seen prices. Countries will not be able to cope with yet another shut down of oil and gas from the Middle East.
The Nations Rage
As these events unfold, the nations will rage. Jeremiah and Isaiah describe this outrage:
At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble; their cry will resound to the Red Sea.
Jeremiah says the Earth will shake at the sound of their (the Psalm 83 coalition) fall. Isaiah 17:12-13 describes it this way:
12 Oh, the raging of many nations— they rage like the raging sea! Oh, the uproar of the peoples— they roar like the roaring of great waters! 13 Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters, when he rebukes them they flee far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills, like tumbleweed before a gale.
Israeli detention camps, along with Israel’s domination of Middle East oil, will have the world in an uproar. There will be war crimes accusations and insults directed at Israel.
(Note – To date, there have been 77 resolutions of condemnation against Israel by the United Nations Human Rights Council. There has been a grand total of ONE resolution condemning the Palestinians for their campaign of terror against Israel.)
Israel will be a pariah to the rest of the world, condemned, and will have greatly damaged the ego of Russia and Iran, and especially Vladimir Putin.
The Russian Connection
We see this Gog-Magog coalition taking shape at this very moment on the nightly news with the alignment of Russia and Iran in the Syrian conflict.
So, when the Psalm 38 war occurrs, and Israel destroys Damascus, as well as the military power of her surrounding nations, will Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, put her tail between her legs and return home?
The bible tells us Russia will not, but will form a new coalition with a new objective: The complete destruction of the nation of Israel, the plunder of her natural resources and wealth.
Note: This is not the Battle of Armageddon which will occur at the end of Tribulation ending with the Return of Christ and the start of his Millennial Reign (Revelation 19:11-16). The war of Armageddon will involve virtually every nation on earth and will initially be centered on the Antichrist. The Gog-Magog war, while involving a huge hoard, will not include every nation on earth and will be lead by Russia and Iran (Ezekiel 38:1-6).
The uproar that the Psalm 83 war will cause, along with the staggering defeat of the Russian / Iranian coalition, will set the stage for the next prophetic event war: the Gog-Magog war described in Ezekiel 38 and 39.
In the next post, we’ll look closer at the “hook in the jaw” that God uses to pull Russia and Iran into this Gog-Magog coalition.
