End Times Prophecy Part 1 – The Psalm 83 War
This past Sunday I made reference to the current geopolitical situation in the Middle East, and how events seem to be lining up with bible prophecy concerning the end times. I also noted that I would post some information to help you understand these events, and how they may fit together.
We’ve seen the news reports that Russia has aligned with Iran to conduct military operations in Syria, with both countries contributing weapons, soldiers on the ground, and Russia supplying air support for the campaign.
In other words, we can say that we are a front row witness to the prophetic setting of the stage for the War of Gog & Magog.
The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him 3 and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4 And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. 5 Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you.
Interestingly, many of the the nations that surround Israel today are absent from the Gog-Magog coalition.
The Gog-Magog Coalition:
- Magog, Rosh = Russia and the former Soviet republics
- Persia = Iran
- Cush = Sudan, Ethiopia, and Possibly Eritrea
- Put = Libya, Algeria, and Tunisa
- Gomer, Meshech, and Tubal = Turkey (and possibly Germany and Austria)
- Beth-togarmah = Turkey, Armenia, and the Turkish-speaking people of Asia Minor & Central Asia
Where is Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, etc?
Ezekiel 28 goes on to describe the setting before the war of Gog and Magog, where Israel is living in safety:
24 No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign LORD. 25 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will show myself holy among them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 They will live there in safety and will build houses and plant vineyards; they will live in safety when I inflict punishment on all their neighbors who maligned them. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God.
Simply paraphrased: “Yes, they will dwell securely when I [God] execute judgments on all those [Arab Nations] around them who despise them.” The Bible tells us that the national security Israel so desperately seeks today occurs via the judgments executed “on all those around them who despise them.”
So, here are the prerequisites for war of Gog & Magog:
1) Israel must be reestablished as a sovereign Jewish Nation. (this was fulfilled in 1948)
2) Israel must be living securely “without walls” [Military secure] (this has not yet been fulfilled)
3) Israel must be living at peace in the Middle East. (this has not yet been fulfilled)
4) Israel must be one of, if not the richest nations on earth. (This condition is being fulfilled as I write this, as massive oil reserves have just been discovered in Northern Israel – CLICK HERE)
Yet, students of prophecy have long wondered why many of the current enemies of Israel are conspicuously absent from the Ezekiel 38 coalition.
The answer to this question seems to be found in Psalm 83, where we are introduced to a distinctly separate and yet-to-be-fulfilled prophecy:
1 Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! 2 For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head. 3 They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted together against Your sheltered ones. 4 They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.” 5 For they have consulted together with one consent; they form a confederacy against You: 6 The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab and the Hagrites; 7 Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; 8 Assyria also has joined with them; they have helped the children of Lot. Selah
Psalm 83 Coalition:
- Tents of Edom = [decedents of Esau] Palestinian Refugees and Southern Jordanians
- Ishmaelites = Saudi Arabians
- Moab = Palestinian Refugees and Central Jordanians
- Hagrites = Egyptians
- Gebal = Northern Lebanese
- Ammon = Palestinian Refugees and Northern Jordanians
- Amalek = Arabs South of Israel
- Philista = Palestinian Refugees and Hamas of Gaza Strip
- Inhabitants of Tyre = Hezbollah and Southern Lebanese
- Assyria = Syrians and perhaps Northern Iraqis included
- Children of Lot = Moab and Ammon
This coalition is very different from the coalition that is given in Ezekiel 38, leading us to the conclusion that these are two separate coalitions, and two separate wars.
Further, it is God and God alone who destroys the Russian/Iranian coalition. However, in the Psalm 83 War, it is the Israeli army who blessed by God destroys a different Arab coalition:
9 Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, 10 who were destroyed at En-dor, who became dung for the ground. 11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, 12 who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves of the pastures of God.”
Psalm 83 gives us a picture of the adversaries of Israel who seek to cut the Jews off from being a nation forming their own coalition, which will be defeated by Israel. This victory could foreseeably lead to the formation of a Russian-Iranian coalition that would be aligned against Israel. Keep in mind that even after the supposed “Iranian deal” that was recently finalized, Iran continues to declare it’s intention to destroy the state of Israel.
Conclusion: Before the war of Gog & Magog, there will be a earlier Middle East war that will quickly start, rapidly conclude, and then be followed by the War of Gog & Magog.
In the next post we’ll dig deeper into this Psalm 83 coalition.
