Certainty in our Relationship with Christ – Luke 1:1-4
Reading plan for this week: Luke 1:1-38
Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. (Luke 1:1-4)
Luke wrote this narrative to Theophilus so that he would “have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.”
In other words, Luke didn’t want Theophilus to be unclear about something very important to his faith: Who Jesus Christ is.
Having a solid foundation of who Jesus Christ is, who He is to us, and who we are to Him, is not something that the Christian should consider to be optional.
Consider human relationships.
If we’re not sure where we stand with someone, it greatly hinders our ability to be in relationship with them.
I’ve watched many marriages have problems simply because the husband or wife didn’t know where they stood with their spouse. They weren’t sure of the other’s love, which led to a lack of trust, which caused the marriage relationship to be a constant up and down of emotional upheavals. Sort of like what Paul described in his letter to the church at Ephesus:
“…so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine…” (Ephesians 4:14)
This is why spending time each day in the word of God, and in prayer, is so important for the Christian: It’s where we’ll discover who Jesus is, who He is to us, and who we are to Him.
Without that certainty, we’re likely to be tossed to and fro by the circumstances that sweep into our lives.
Without that certainty, we’re less likely to be able to stand fast when the storms hit.
Knowing Christ is what will bring certainty to our relationship with Him, and enable us to navigate this life in strength and confidence!
We can change the world, one life at a time…
