An Eternal Solution – Luke 2:1-5
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. (Luke 2:1-5)
The time of Jesus birth was what could be called a transitionary period. The Roman Empire had suffered decades of civil war, unrest, and economic depression after the death of Julius Caesar.
But after defeating the armies of Antony and Queen Cleopatra, Octavian was now sole ruler of Rome, and he convinced the Roman Senate to grant him the title Caesar Augustus, which means “exalted” and “sacred.”
From that point on, Rome wasn’t a republic, governed by laws; it was an empire governed by an emperor.
And one of Caesar Augustus first acts was to issue a decree that every person in the Roman Empire should return to their place of birth, and be counted in a census.
While all of these events may seem to be coincidental, they are in fact proof of the sovereignty of God.
That a single man would have the power to issue a decree that would bring Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem at the exact time of Jesus birth, fulfilling prophecy (Micah 5:2) is no simple matter.
That the census itself, and the man who called it, would provide a verifiable timestamp for the birth of Christ is no coincidence.
That the world that Jesus was born into was in a place of yearning for a savior, someone who could rise up and solve the problems that faced civilization was no accident.
Jesus came into this world with the answer to man’s problems – not a new government, or a new program, but the eternal solution of the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
In many ways our culture faces the same dilemma’s of Jesus day. Wars, economic struggles, crime, moral decline. Each election cycle brings a new group of candidates who promise that they have the answers.
But the root cause our problems today is the same root cause as it was in Jesus’ day – Man is in charge. Our solution will not come from a new leader, a new program, or a new party.
The solution to our problems today is the same solution as it was in Jesus’ day – The eternal gospel message of Jesus Christ.
We can change the world, one life at a time…
