What is the church?

  1. When we speak of the CHURCH today – many thoughts
    1. Building – steeple – stained glass
    2. Images of my grandmothers church
    3. St Peters cathedral
    4. One definition:  “one of the groups of Christians who have formed their own beliefs and forms of worship”
  2. In fact the church is not a building, or a place, or an institution, or “groups of Christians who have formed their own beliefs and forms of worship” - none of these
    1. English word church comes from Greek kuriakos meaning “belonging to God”
    2. Found in bible it is the Greek ekklesia witch is “called out – the congregation”
    3. IOW – the church are those who are called out by God, belonging to God,

                                                              i.      In a broad sense all Christians

ii.      In the local sense a local congregation of Christians

  1. When we speak of the church today, we also infer the New Testament church – the congregation of the New Covenant,
    1. Those who have believed the gospel of Jesus Christ, who have been washed by His blood, who have experienced the NEW BIRTH

Start – Acts 2

  1. The NT church started in Jerusalem, after Jesus ascension to the Father.
    1. We find Peter and the disciples in a house, together, the Holy Spirit descends upon them
    2. Peter stands and preaches – and three thousand people believed the gospel message and were baptized

Acts 2:40-47

And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.  42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.

46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

  1. WHO?  Jews.  Jewish men & women who believed that Jesus Christ is the Messiah
    1. It was not until later in Acts 10 that the Lord sends Peter to the house of Cornelius.
    2. And when he returns to Jerusalem, explains what happened to the others, and they realize that God had granted life also to the Gentiles – YOU AND ME!
  2. So – the church is not Baptist, nor Methodist, nor Calvary Chapel
    1. But PEOPLE – who have received life through Jesus Christ
    2. Living organism – physical and spiritual
    3. There were no building, they met at Solomon’s Porch until they were dispersed
    4. They met in houses – wherever
    5. The gifts of the Spirit were manifested for the work of the ministry
    6. The Holy Spirit guided them every step
    7. And the Lord added to the church
  3. IMPORTANT:
    1. God started
    2. God powered
    3. God guided
    4. God grown!

Who is in the church?

Believers – all who call upon the name of Christ

1 Cor 1:2

2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:

  1. The church is unique in that is it exclusive – only Christians are part of it
    1. Yet also inclusive – it is OPEN TO ALL
    2. Not by filling out a form, or going through a class – but by receiving the NEW BIRTH
    3. You can COME TO A CHURCH as a non-believer, and we WANT non-believers to come and hear gospel
    4. But you are not really a part of the church until you become a Christian.
    5. Again – not a building or a list of members, but a FAMILY – we are children of God
  2. Which is why we don’t have “membership” at CCW.
    1. Once you receive the new birth, you are IN THE CHURCH!
    2. If you come to this church, you are part of our LOCAL fellowship. – local church.

Purpose & Vision of the Church

  1. I heard recently that the WORST place to be is a pastor of a church with no vision
    1. Fact is many churches are in the place – the vision of the church comes from the last book the pastor read
    2. Many bounce from one fad to the next – Prayer of Jebez, Purpose Driven Church
    3. Burgeoning industry – I get them in the mail, see on internet – way to grow your church, increase tithes
  2. Fact is we are given the vision – the purpose, in God’s word

Matt 28:19-20

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…

Acts 2:42

42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

  1. SIMPLE:
    1. Make disciples – preach the gospel message
    2. “teaching them”  “continuing in Doctrine” – teach the word
    3. Fellowship – come together
    4. Break Bread – the Lords Supper
    5. Prayer – pray and worship together
    6. continued steadfastly – they did this ALL THE TIME
  2. We certainly can refine it…

Eph 4:11-16

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head -- Christ --  16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

  1. This is a picture of the church – a healthy church
    1. Apostles (sent out), prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers
    2. Working together the build up and strengthen the people in FAITH – KNOWLEDGE – DOCTRINE - TRUTH
    3. Result – personal spiritual growth, a joining together
    4. Effective working together – each doing his/her part
    5. Building up in LOVE
  2. and it has an effect on the world around us… making known the manifold wisdom of God to principalities and powers in the heavenly places

Eph 3:8-13

To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;   10 to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,  11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him. 13 Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

Structure

Christ is head

  1. Now – we call the church “our church” – which is fine in the sense that we belong to this local congregation
    1. But in fact the church belongs to Jesus – paid for by His blood

Matt 16:18-19

18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

17. Jesus tells us it is HIS church, HIS bride, and when He returns I don’t want Him to find MY FINGERPRINTS on HIS BRIDE!

a.      Because it is HIS church, Hell will not prevail against it – the moment we take over – we are VULNERABLE!

b.     Because it is His church, we are ruled – we are SUBJECT – we are to be SUBMITTED to Him in everything!

Eph 5:23-24

23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

18. Will we do it perfectly? No, but if we have a submissive heart, then when we err, we will immediately yield to Him and get back on track

a.      And we can be secure in this place – because He loves us…

Eph 5:29

29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.

  1. Are there to be leaders?  Yes

Men are appointed by God

  1. There are to leaders, appointed by God, submitted to God,
    1. Who are to serve as shepherds of God’s flock
    2. The Flock that He purchased with HIS OWN BLOOD – high value!

1 Peter 5:1-4

2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

Acts 20:27-28

28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

  1. Paul gives us more detail in Eph:

Eph 4:11

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

  1. These are specific roles that God has appointed in the church
    1. It is a an appointment – a calling – not a job
    2. People go into the ministry for a variety of reasons – many having nothing to do with a calling of God
  2. How can I tell?
    1. Was it God appointed?

                                                              i.      Received by leading of the Holy Spirit

ii.      Confirmed by prophecy and By the Word of God?

iii.      Confirmed by those who are in spiritual authority (laying on of hands)

    1. Would I do it for FREE?  If I also had to work AND do it?
    2. Am I willing to sacrifice?  “I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church,”
  1. I don’t mean to make ministry sound as if it’s a miserable experience
    1. No greater blessing than to be where God has called you
    2. Yet I believe that God often allows us to walk through experiences of trial and sacrifice to allow ME to see MY HEART
    3. Confirms to ME the calling
    4. Christ Himself sacrificed for us
    5. The Levites – no land inheritance (the Lord was their inheritance – Deut 10:9)
  2. Fact is – if the ministry paid $100K per year, four weeks vacation, 30 hour workweek –
    1. The ministry would be full of lazy greedy people!
  3. Those who are overseers and teachers will give an account to the Lord for their work

Heb 13:17

17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

James 3:1-2

My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.

Practice – in the Service

Assemble together

Matt 18:20

20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."

  1. Why did Jesus say this?  No need to be overly theological – but I believe He simply means that we are to COME TOGETHER in His name!

1 Cor 5:4

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Heb 10:23-25

24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

Worship God

Ps 84:4

4 Blessed are those who dwell in Your house;

They will still be praising You.

  1. Personal worship is a necessity for the Christian – a time to enter into the deep places of our heart with the Lord
    1. But it is not the same as congregational worship – when we come together in one accord,
    2. In the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ – with Him in our midst
    3. Lifting up our praise, thanksgiving, and love for Him as one voice
  2. It is biblical

Ps 150

Praise the LORD!

Praise God in His sanctuary;

Praise Him in His mighty firmament!

2 Praise Him for His mighty acts;

Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;

Praise Him with the lute and harp!

4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;

Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!

5 Praise Him with loud cymbals;

Praise Him with clashing cymbals!

6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.

Praise the LORD!

Col 3:16

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Teach the Word

Acts 2:42

42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

  1. A primary focus in the church is the teach the word – first to those who are unsaved:

Rom 10:14-15

How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,Who bring glad tidings of good things!"

  1. And secondly to the elect:

2 Tim 4:1-2

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

  1. We saw in Eph 4 that God has appointed that the called men, teachers, would teach the word to His people
    1. For a purpose…

2 Tim 3:16-17

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

1 Tim 4:13-16

13 Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. …16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

  1. For me personally, the Word of God, given to me through godly men, is a source of strengthening of my spiritual man
    1. It instructs me
    2. Corrects me
    3. Reproves me
    4. Refreshes me
  2. There is also a warning – “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine”
    1. Paul instructs Timothy to rebuke those who teach unsound doctrine
    2. Read through the letters to the seven churches –

                                                              i.      Pergamos & Thyatira both held to false doctrines

ii.      Jesus had STERN WARNINGS – repent or I will for you!

Part 2 Practice – anytime

Minister to one another

1 Cor 12:4-6

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

1 Peter 4:9-10

10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

35. You may have noted that there has been quite a lot of teaching over the last year on the “gifts of the Holy Spirit”

a.      Not trying to make you all “Pentecostals”

b.     But to reveal to you that God has given gifts to His church for the edification (building up) of His church

c.      And we are minister to one another with these gifts

d.     Healing, words of wisdom & knowledge, prophecy

e.      Also helps, administrations, teachings

1 Cor 14:11-12

12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

36. We are one body – with one God, one Lord, one Spirit – WE NEED EACH OTHER

a.      Are you rejoicing?  Isn’t it a blessing to have someone to rejoice with?

b.     Hurting – we are to comfort one another (2 Cor 1)

c.      Fallen into sin?  Restore one another in gentleness (Gal 6:1)

d.     Have a need? We are to share our goods (1 John 3:17)

37. It is a cold, harsh world – our church family ought to be a refuge where we can find comfort – love – peace – support – prayer – and above all LOVE

Heb 10:23-25

24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,

Pray for one another and the sick

  1. How often to you experience someone praying for you?
    1. How often do you pray for someone else?
    2. If the answer is “never” or “not very often”, then you are missing out on the most effective POWER that we have as Christians!

James 5:13-18

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

  1. I think that the reason prayer is NOT more a part of a church or a believer’s life is that there is a LACK OF BELIEF that God hears and answers prayer.
    1. Maybe we don’t’ believe that God can hear – or will hear
    2. Or that He will respond
    3. If we think like this – we are dismissing the very NATURE of God – Omnipotent – Omniscient – Omnipresent
    4. HE IS CAPABLE AND DESIRES to be help!
  2. Yet James compares our prayers to Elijah’s!

17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

  1. We often think of these men – like Elijah – as having a special thing that God answers THEIR prayers – but not ours
    1. James is very clear that we are to pray for one another –
    2. Just like Elijah – GOD WILL ANSWER!
    3. (YES – NO – LATER)

Judge – assisting in disputes

  1. Not judging as in krino “to condemn

James 4:11-12

Do not speak evil of one another, brethren. He who speaks evil of a brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one Lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. Who are you to judge another?

  1. but to diakrino – to discern, to examine and make a determination
    1. ASSISTING DISCERNMENT!

1 Cor 6:1-4

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life? 4 If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge?

  1. Paul is rebuking them for going to secular judges – ungodly counsel
    1. Their judgment will NOT be based on God’s word or truth
    2. You MAY NOT LIKE the result!
  2. Not that I believe that every little dispute has to come to the pastor
    1. But if there are disputes among the body, and they cannot be resolved between one another, we have a biblical mandate:

Matt 18:15-17

"Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.  16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.'   17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

  1. IOW: The church is the place where believers can come to have a problem resolved by GODLY COUNSEL
    1. Where we can bring our dispute to the church leadership
    2. Who will (hopefully) discern with the word of God and the Holy Spirit
    3. And help us to work out solutions that will be a blessing, and bring reconciliation to the body
  2. POINT – RECONCILATION – REJOIN – HEAL of the body
    1. If not there will be negative consequences
  3. We very rarely find this happening…WHY?
    1. We don’t want people – especially the church – knowing our business
    2. We don’t want to hear what they might have to say!
  4. But I wonder if there might be less disputes and division among believers if they were to use resource God has given to assist
    1. How things might be resolved and God would be glorified
  5. Same with this next area:

Correction

  1. Who want correction? In today’s environment of independence and freedom, very few will submit themselves to the correction of the local church
    1. My experience is that folks will act like everything is A-OK to their pastor and leadership
    2. We like to HIDE behind a FACADE
    3. If there are problems, I’m the last one to find out!
    4. They usually just LEAVE THE CHURCH
  2. STATISTIC - 80% of the people in a church come from another church
    1. They left other church because they didn’t like something
    2. Unless they grow in maturity – they will find something here they don’t like – and LEAVE AGAIN!
    3. Problem – if you never stay in one place, does not allow God to do a work in that area!
  3. Or when someone is involved in some sin that might become exposed, they usually just leave.
    1. Show up at another church, no one knows
    2. Problem is, the problem has not been dealt with – no repentance, no humility
    3. The problem usually resurfaces
  4. Not saying we should be sin-sniffers -
    1. I find that most situations that come to light – we can pray and the Lord will do the work of conviction and restoration
    2. The Lord has a way of dealing with His children – and He is more effective than I will ever be!

Heb 12:5-6

5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:

"My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD,

Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;

6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens,

And scourges every son whom He receives."

  1. And if we do need to step in, Paul gives us a loving way to deal with one another

Gal 6:1

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

  1. spirit of gentleness will draw TO the Lord – spirit of JUDGMENT will push people away.
  2. But there are times when the church must step in, such as in the case of the church at Corinth:

1 Cor 5:1-5

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles -- that a man has his father's wife! 2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you.

  1. IOW – if there is sin within the body that would defile the body – as in the example Paul gives us – that person must be removed so as not to defile the body
    1. Paul instructs them:

3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (krino!) (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

  1. IOW – this person is removed from the protective covering of the church
    1. He is released to his choice – which is basically giving himself over to Satan to fulfill his flesh
    2. Which will in fact bring destruction – and hopefully repentance
    3. How many times have I seen Christians start down a path of sin – many times sexual immorality – and the end result is always the same
    4. NEVER in 20 years have I talked to someone who could say “man, I am so happy that I walked away from God and the church, I am so fulfilled in my lifestye!”
    5. Just the opposite – EVERYONE I have ever spoken openly with wishes to God that they could go back and make a different decision
  2. In practice – we don’t find this happening very often – again because most people will not stick around – they will flee.
    1. Unless the church is turning a blind eye – or being “tolerant”
    2. Which is EXACTLY what Paul is calling this church (and it’s pastor) to task for!
    3. Read through Revelation 2 – the church at Pergamos & Thyatira – Jesus rebukes them for allowing sexual immorality

Part III

Relationships – UNITY

1 Cor 12:12-26

12 Unity and Diversity in One Body

For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body -- whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free -- and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.

15 If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, 24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

  1. What does this mean?  That we are all connected, Paul calls it the “fellowship of the Spirit” (Phil 2)
    1. IOW we are connected to one another by the Spirit of God – JUST AS HE PLEASED!
    2. We cannot say that we are independent – your leg might not think it really needs your arm – but try running with one arm – you will be unbalanced
    3. Our parts of physical bodies are connected in so may ways that we don’t even understand yet – the intricacies of the relationships and dependence
    4. One thing can get out of whack and the whole body can shut down
  2. And as well – each part of the human body has specific functions, that work together, each for the benefit of the whole
    1. Just think about the simple act of eating – you take in food, the mouth and teeth do their job
    2. Stomach and intestines break it all down
    3. Blood, vessels and heart circulate the nutrients
    4. Liver processes the components – glands produce needed compounds
    5. If we eat healthy foods – the entire body benefits, and has strength for life!
  3. In the church we are also inter-connected in ways that we don’t fully understand
    1. We come together – feed on God’s word, being strengthened
    2. Different members working in different ways of ministering and building up – all for the benefit of the whole
  4. Problems occur when one part decides to act independent, not considering the body
    1. “it’s my life, and it doesn’t concern anyone else
    2. But in fact – it concerns EVERYONE else
    3. The church may only be as strong as it’s weakest member
    4. REALLY?  There have been many times where local fellowships have scattered and died because if the actions of one or a few people.
    5. Church split – usually involves 4 people – DIVISIVE MINORITY!
  5. POSITIVE – As well being connected has it’s advantages – because the weaker parts can be STRENGTHENED by the stronger
    1. If I am weak – there are fellow members around me to ENCOURGE – the LIFT UP – the LOVE
    2. I AM NOT ALONE!
    3. If I view you as important to the health of the whole – I HAVE A VESTED INTEREST in ministering to you!

Part III

Rom 15:5 Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6 that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. All of this coming together, working together, speaks of a special relationship born of the Spirit
    1. As members of one body, we ought to LOVE ONE ANOTHER

RELATIONSHIPS - Love & Encourage One Another

1 John 4:7-11

7 Knowing God Through Love

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

  1. “Those who are loved – let us love” – we love not to EARN merit from God – but BECAUSE He loves us!
    1. Love is of God – how can I love more?  Get CLOSER TO GOD

                                                              i.      His word – worship – prayer – filled by Spirit

Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control.

    1. We cannot MAKE OURSELVES LOVE – it is against our nature
    2. But as we stay close to the Lord – we take on HIS NATURE
    3. We can SEE – “everyone who loves is born of God and knows God”

8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 1:5-7

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

  1. Love is an ACTION word

Col 3:9 since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,

Col 3:14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

Eph 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

  1. The speaks directly to our INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
    1. “bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking”, these are all things that are NOT characteristics of God, but rather of Satan
    2. PUT THEM AWAY – IOW: because of our sin nature, these feelings may well enter into your heart
    3. When they do – YOU HAVE A CHOICE – will I embrace them, or put them away?
  2. And instead, by the power of God’s Spirit that lives in me, to EMBRACE “kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you”  -
    1. These ARE in the nature and character of God
    2. As I grow – becoming more like Christ – more of His character and nature in me –
    3. Then HIS NATURE and character are manifested in my life!

Col 3:12-16

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
